Gone Too Soon

Gone too soon
I know I will
never understand why

I try to imagine
you have become
my canopy of safety
absorbed in the sky

Today, though,
my heart can’t help
but cry

For how long now,
I’m not sure,
I have been carving your name
into the trunk of a proud
Willow tree,
artfully,
delicately,
intricately,
this act of xylography
for now,
my only therapy.
