word challenge/prompt: columbine

Melancholy settling in
trying to make my heart sigh,
My words and inspiration elude me
despite how hard I try.
It is this hollow winter which has
grown long in the tooth.
When I let down my guard it darkens
the doorway of my heart-
Its cold fingers press on the scars and
bruises of days gone by.
But this is just a moment inside of today…
Perhaps my words have already spilled over into
the columbine peace of tomorrow’s dawn.
